A big factor in creating power is in your heads. a good set of cylinder heads will make some power compared to stock. the only set of stock heads i have found to perform well is the 5.7 vortec heads if you put them on a carbrated engine. Otherwise dart, camelhump, and trick flow make some very good heads for a chevy small block.

Build a Cheep Motor

How to build a cheep but hard running motor. When it comes to money wise you are probably looking at about $3000 to build a small block from ground up. If you have most of the parts needed just needing some machine work and some new guts for the engine probably about $1500. The two main things that lead to a good running engine is compression and flow. You need to take some time and port and polish both intake and exhaust on the motor. This will increase flow through the engine resulting in more horsepower with little expence which is what every one loves to hear. Also compression plays a big factor in making power and for a little amount thier is a couple of things you can do to raise this. One you can do things like decking the block or planeing the heads. Thiner head gaskets will also gain you a little bit but every thing counts. Going internal you can run flat top pistons or dome pistons which greatly increase compression compared to the old stock ones. If you really want to get picky about it try to find pistons with only two valve reliefs. The main thing with these is that make sure that they are the right direction when you put them in so you dont bend any valves. Give it a shot and good luck.

hey i am chad i have had alot of experience with chevy small blocks when it comes to performance. i live breath and sleep performance. i own and 89 camaro that i put together this past summer and its not the fastest but it does the job. i droped the 355 that i built into this car which is a perty good power house for this small of a car. if you have any questions please ask me i will probably know but if not i will try my hardest to get them ansered as soon as possible
